NEURODIVERGENT COACHING

ADHD & Executive Function Support for Adults and Young Adults

Your Brain Isn’t the Problem.

It’s brilliant—and it’s time the rest of your life caught up.

You think fast. You feel deep. You see what others miss.

But when your thoughts start to loop, stall, or spiral, it can feel like your mind is working against you.

It’s not. You just haven’t been taught how to work with it—yet.

I'm Dr. Kristen Eccleston, and I help high-cognitive neurodivergent minds stop fighting their own wiring and start building systems that actually fit. Whether you're an adult stuck in overthinking and burnout, or a family navigating school avoidance with a brilliant young adult who's shut down—the work is the same: understand the brain, build the strategy, move forward.

Educational Coaching for School-Avoidant Young Adults

Anxiety, School Refusal & Educational Re-Engagement Support | Ages 16-29

Educational coaching is designed for young adults who are struggling to move forward with their education dueto anxiety, neurodivergence, trauma, or other complex factors.

This is not tutoring. It's collaborative, relationship-based work that meets your young adult where they are and helps them move forward at a pace that works for them.

Is This Your Young Adult?

  • Experiencing school avoidance or school refusal

  • Disconnected from traditional schooling and unsure of next steps

  • Managing mental health challenges that interfere with academic engagement

  • Navigating transitions back to school after therapeutic placements, hospitalizations, or extended absences

  • Needing support to identify alternative pathways (GED, community college, vocational programs)

  • Struggling with executive function, organization, or self-advocacy in academic settings

  • Twice-exceptional (2e) and needs someone who understands both their gifts and challenges

If this sounds familiar, there is a path forward.

What Educational Coaching Sessions Focus On

  • Clarifying Goals What does your young adult actually want? What feels possible? What's getting in the way?

  • Building a Concrete Plan Identifying educational options (returning to school, GED programs, communitycollege, vocational pathways, alternative programs) and mapping out realistic steps.

  • Developing Practical Skills Organization, time management, self-advocacy, managing anxiety in academicsettings, communicating with teachers and schools.

  • Processing Barriers Understanding how anxiety, avoidance, or past negative experiences show up—andfinding strategies that work for this individual.

  • Application & Enrollment Support Help with researching programs, completing applications, preparing forinterviews or placement tests, and navigating logistics.

How I Work With Families

I meet with your young adult directly. This is their work, and they need to feel ownership over it.

At the same time, I maintain regular communication with parents through separate check-ins to provide updates, answer questions, and coordinate logistics.

When your young adult is already working with a therapist or other providers, I coordinate as part of the team. The goal is to complement clinical work, not duplicate it. I focus on the educational and practical side while the clinician addresses the therapeutic.

Session Structure & Format

Coaching typically begins with weekly sessions to build rapport and establish momentum. As your young adult gains traction and confidence, sessions may shift to biweekly or as needed.

Sessions can be virtual or in-person, depending on your young adult's needs. For students experiencing significant anxiety, I'm happy to meet at their home, a neutral location, or my home office—whatever helps them feel most comfortable.

Why Families Choose to Work With Me

I bring 20 years of experience working with students who have been mislabeled, misunderstood, or failed by traditional educational systems.

My doctoral research at Johns Hopkins focused on how trauma, mental health conditions, and neurodivergence affect cognitive processing and learning. I understand the patterns, the sticking points, and the strategies that actually help.

I'm direct but compassionate. I won't pretend everything is fine when it's not, but I will never shame a student for where they are. My job is to help them see a path forward and believe they can take it

Coaching for Neurodivergent Adults

Nervous System Regulation, Executive Function & Building a Life That Fits Your Brain

This coaching supports high-cognitive neurodivergent adults who have the capacity and desire to grow but findthat traditional approaches—whether academic, therapeutic, or productivity-based—haven't worked. The focusis on nervous system regulation and executive functioning support, not behavior modification or compliance.

Is This You?

  • You think in rich, associative, nonlinear ways

  • You have strong intellectual capacity but struggle with initiation, transitions, and task completion

  • You become overwhelmed by vague expectations, urgency, or pressure

  • You've had difficult experiences with previous providers, programs, or systems

  • You value autonomy and need to understand why before you can engage with what

  • You're tired of underperforming relative to what you know you're capable of

If you're nodding along, keep reading.

What Coaching Sessions Look Like

Sessions are collaborative, not directive. Rather than imposing goals or timelines, we work together to identifywhat's actually happening in your nervous system and cognitive load, then build from there.

A typical session might include:

  • Structured conversation with predictable pacing and built-in transitions

  • Gentle interruption when thoughts begin to loop or stack

  • Reframing past experiences without dismissing what was real about them

  • Shared language development—creating metaphors and reference points that make sense for how yourbrain works

  • Reflection over instruction—asking questions rather than giving directives

Progress is measured by momentum and capacity alignment, not productivity metrics.

What We Work On Together

Nervous System Regulation Learning to recognize dysregulation signals and building tolerance for cognitivediscomfort without shutdown.

Executive Function Support Breaking tasks into micro-steps, removing performance pressure, and providingexternal structure that doesn't feel controlling.'

Emotional Processing Working with rigidity, flooding, and perseveration in ways that build flexibility ratherthan suppress experience.

Relational Stability Reducing crisis cycles and supporting healthier communication patterns with family orpartners.

Gradual Re-Engagement Moving toward functional independence at a pace your nervous system can sustain.

Family and Sponsor Involvement

Parents, partners, or sponsors are often part of the process—not as obstacles, but as essential collaborators.Coaching includes guidance for family members on:

  • Communication timing and pacing

  • How to set boundaries that protect your nervous system

  • When to step back and when to provide scaffolding

  • How to stay connected without escalating

Family involvement is framed as relationship protection, not parenting correction.

What Makes This Different

This is not therapy, and it's not productivity coaching. There are no lectures about "trying harder" or "pushingthrough."

The assumption is always that you are capable, not broken—and that when the right conditions are in place, forward movement happens naturally.

The work is about alignment, not force.

About Dr. Kristen Eccleston

Ed.D. in Mind, Brain, and Teaching | Johns Hopkins University

National Board Certified | Exceptional Needs Specialist

20 Years Working With Neurodivergent Learners

I've spent my career working with students and adults who have been mislabeled, misunderstood, or failed bysystems that weren't built for how they think.

My doctoral research focused on how trauma, mental health, and neurodivergence affect cognitive processing. I developed and implemented the E-SESES program for Montgomery County Public Schools, which has saved millions in privateplacement costs over 11+ years. I'm neurodivergent myself—which means I understand these challenges fromthe inside.

I don't do generic advice or empty cheerleading. I help people understand their brains, build systems that actually work, and move forward on their own terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is this different from therapy?

A: Therapy addresses mental health, emotional processing, and healing from past experiences. This is cognitiveperformance and educational coaching—we're building systems, strategies, and concrete plans for how youfunction day-to-day. Many clients do both simultaneously, and they complement each other well. When a youngadult is working with a therapist, I coordinate as part of the team.

Q: Do I need a formal diagnosis to work with you?

A: No. I don't teach academic content. I help young adults figure out what educational path makes sense for them, build the skills to navigate it (organization, self-advocacy, managing anxiety), and stay on track. If tutoring is needed, I can help identify the right resources.

Q: My young adult won't engage with anyone. How does this even work?

A: I'm not a therapist asking them to process feelings. I'm someone helping them solve a problem they actuallycare about: figuring out a path forward that doesn't feel impossible. Most young adults engage because the workis concrete, they have a say in the plan, and I meet them where they are—literally and figuratively. For studentswith significant anxiety, I'll meet at their home, a neutral location, or wherever helps them feel comfortable.

Q: Can you help with IEP meetings or school advocacy?

A: Yes—I offer standalone IEP/504 consultation and advocacy support through Eccleston Education Consulting. This can be part of an educational coaching package or a separate service.

Q: How quickly will we see results?

A: It depends on where you're starting. Some clients feel relief in the first session just from understanding their brain differently or seeing a realistic path forward. Sustainable change typically builds over 2–3 months of consistent work. For young adults who've been stuck for a long time, the timeline may be longer—and that's okay.

Q: What if we're in crisis?

A: If your family is in acute crisis—complete school refusal, mental health emergency, total shutdown—we candiscuss whether coaching is the right fit right now or if other supports need to come first. Sometimes the answer is both.

Q: Do you work with clients outside of Maryland?

A: Yes. I work with clients nationwide via virtual sessions. For local clients in the DC/Maryland area, in-person sessions are available.
